Orthodontic Retainers in Kent, WA

Retainers hold your teeth in their new positions after braces or Invisalign while the surrounding bone and tissue stabilize. Because teeth naturally shift with age, most patients wear a retainer long-term - often nightly for life. Advanced Orthodontics Kent provides custom removable and fixed retainers to protect your results.

Finishing orthodontic treatment is an exciting moment - but keeping your smile straight, healthy, and stable over the years depends on proper retainer wear. Teeth naturally shift as we age, and retainers are the key to protecting all the work you put into treatment. Here’s clear guidance on how retainers work, how long to wear them, and how to care for them.

Why Retainers Matter After Braces

Retainers hold your teeth in their new positions while the surrounding bone, ligaments, and soft tissues stabilize. Even after everything feels “set,” small movements can still happen. Retainers prevent teeth from drifting or rotating, protect your bite long-term, maintain your cosmetic results, reduce the risk of needing retreatment, and help counteract natural aging. Your smile is a lifelong investment - retainers keep it that way.

Habits That Call for Stronger Retention

Some habits and natural tendencies raise the chance of relapse. If any apply to you, Dr. Aragon may recommend more consistent wear: mouth breathing, clenching or grinding, tongue thrusting or low resting tongue posture, playing reed instruments, lip sucking, pen/pencil biting, pre-treatment spacing, or severely rotated teeth.

Removable Retainers

Once your braces or Invisalign aligners come off, you’ll receive custom retainers to stabilize your results - and wearing them exactly as instructed is essential. Dr. Aragon may recommend full-time wear at first (except for eating, brushing, or sports), transitioning to nighttime-only once your smile stabilizes, and lifetime nighttime wear since teeth shift naturally with age. A little pressure is normal, especially after a gap in wear - that’s the retainer doing its job. Care: store them in their case, keep them away from heat (sunlight, hot water, dashboards), brush gently with mild soap, soak occasionally in a 50/50 vinegar-water mix, and rinse before wearing. Avoid boiling water, curious pets, and wrapping them in napkins (they get tossed!).

Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wires)

Fixed retainers are thin wires placed behind the front teeth to hold alignment. Most patients keep them indefinitely, as long as they stay clean and healthy - your dentist will check the wire at routine visits. If plaque buildup begins affecting the gums or bone, your dentist may recommend switching to a removable retainer. If a fixed retainer breaks or feels loose, call our office right away: a loose wire can let teeth shift quickly, so timely repair matters.

Keeping Your Smile for Life

Maintaining your results is simple: wear your retainers consistently, follow cleaning instructions, avoid habits that pressure teeth, keep up regular dental visits, and contact us right away if a retainer feels loose, tight, or uncomfortable. Because retainers are worn long-term, they may need periodic replacement - your treatment contract typically includes one or two sets, and lost or damaged retainers may have a replacement fee.

Yes - teeth can shift throughout life due to natural aging, bite changes, and daily habits. That’s why long-term retainer wear is so important to maintain your results.

Teeth can gradually move out of alignment, and in some cases this requires additional orthodontic treatment to correct. Even if your teeth feel stable, wear your retainer as instructed.

Signs include cracks, warping, looseness, or a poor fit. If it no longer feels secure or comfortable, contact our office for an evaluation.

Call us as soon as possible so we can arrange a replacement before your teeth shift. The longer you go without one, the more likely teeth are to move.
